Bolivia is a landlocked country in South America, bordered by Brazil on the north and east, Paraguay and Argentina on the south, and Chile and Peru on the west. The west of Bolivia is situated in the Andes mountain range, with the highest peak, Nevado Del Sajama at 6,542 metres (21,463 ft). The east of the country is lowland, and covered by the Amazonian rainforests. In the west, in the department of Potosí, lies the Salar de Uyuni, the world's largest salt flats.
The ancient history of Bolivia is first and foremost woven into the great Andean empires of the Aymara civilization. This innovative and powerful culture was eventually conquered by the Incas at the end of the 15th century. In their obsessive search for gold and silver, the Spanish arrived here in the 16th century; they quickly defeated the Incas, and changed the economic and social fabric of Bolivia forever…
This fascinating history has had an important impact on Bolivian culture. Bolivia has many Inca, Aymara and other indigenous influences in religion, music and clothing, depending upon the region of the country, isolation of the cultures and contact with European (Spanish) culture.
Bolivia is a country rich in natural resources. This marvelous land of natural beauty has vast quantities of untapped, gas, gold, oil and silver deposits, as well as a large palette of colorful attractions for all travelers.
